You may not know who George B. Selden is, but he has a colorful history in the early era of the automobile. George was the man that held the original patent on the automobile in the United States. The patent was applied for in 1879 and finally granted in 1895. All builders of cars paid him a royalty of five percent until Henry Ford took it to court and broke the patent in 1911.
